About Our Founder

Hugh Jassman, or Paw Paw as the Jassman family often refers to him, was born in Aberdeen, Scotland in 1838. His parents immigrated to the United States in 1840, when Jassman was only two years of age.

The Jassman’s quickly established themselves in the city of Boston, where they owned a distillery in what is now historic South Boston. Young Hugh was exceptionally bright and began selling a variety of beverages to schoolmates and door-to-door in the neighborhood.

hugh_jassman.jpgBy the age of 13, Hugh had earned a position at Harvard University. In 1854, he was one of the youngest graduates of the institution. He went on to practice law in Boston, specializing in business and corporate matters.

In the late 1880s, Jassman began formulating a business model based on the needs of many of his wealthy and influential clients. He envisioned a new kind of transnational corporation that would exist in a world without the nationalism and xenophobia that restricted progress and enslaved much of the world.

In 1894, along with John Jacob Astor, Andrew Carnegie, Daniel Drew, James Buchanan Duke, James Fisk, Henry Flager, Jay Gould, Collis P. Huntington, John D. Rockefeller, Leland Stanford and Cornelius Vanderbilt, Jassman founded Global Amalgamated.

Global Amalgamated was one of the first truly transnational enterprises specializing in finance, manufacturing, transportation, and energy. The new company thrived as it acquired subsidiaries in hundreds of industries thoughout the world.

Upon Paw Paw’s death on October 24, 1929, Hugh Jassman, Jr. took over leadership of Global Amalgamated. Hugh Jassman, Jr. carried on the principles established by his father and successfully brought the corporation through somewhat difficult economic times.

In 1954, the name of the corporation was changed to Global Nemesis.

Why “Nemesis”?

goddess_nemesis.jpgOften, people ask why our corporation is named Global Nemesis. We know it is the word Nemesis that makes people scratch their heads.

Most people think that Nemesis is a synonym for enemy. Actually, that not the case.

Nemesis is the Greek goddess of divine retribution who punishes excessive pride, undeserved happiness, and the absence of moderation.

Our founder, Hugh Jassman, was an avid reader of Greek mythology and he knew that Nemesis represents the righteous outcome for those who abuse their power and position in the world of business. Over the years, he saw many of his wealthy clients’ lives fall to ruin because they did not live modestly and accept the great responsibily that comes with being a business leader.

If you ever get the chance to visit our corporate headquarters in Boston, you will see countless sculptures and paintings that represent Nemesis. She is most often depicted as a winged creature, similar to an angel. We see her as a friend, not an enemy.
